Hotel Block

Looking for a great deal on a hotel room? We have it for you! PES has managed to arrange a fantastic room rate at the attached Westin Convention Center, Pittsburgh.

To make reservations visit the Magic the Gathering Grand Prix Pittsburgh hotel website.

Group rate has been extended until March 8, 2013 and is subject to Availability.

Format

The format for Grand Prix Pittsburgh 2013 will be Gatecrash Limited. For the Sealed portion of the event, players will be given six packs of Gatecrash from which to build a legal deck. Limited decks must contain a minimum of forty cards. There is no maximum deck size; however, you must be able to shuffle your deck with no assistance. All cards remaining in a player's pool after deck construction are their sideboard.

Deck lists are required and a deck registration and deck swap will be performed for the Swiss Sealed Deck.

For the Drafts, players will draft from three booster packs of Gatecrash. Deck Registration will be done at the completion of the draft.

Basic land cards will be provided. All cards named Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest are basic.

Official information about Sealed formats can be found in the Magic: The Gathering Floor Rules.

Structure

  • Modified Swiss-style (50-minute rounds).
  • If 799 or fewer players register for the event, all players with an X-2-0 or better record OR the top 64 players—whichever number is greater—will advance to the second day of the event.
  • If 800 or more players register for the event, all players with an X-2-0 or better record OR the top 128 players—whichever number is greater—will advance to the second day of the event.
  • The Top 8 players after the final Swiss round on Day 2 will advance to the Top 8 single-elimination playoff round.
  • Top 8 playoff matches will be best 2 of 3, and have no time limit. (Players are still expected to play at a normal pace and complete playoff matches in a reasonable amount of time.)
  • Where necessary, the standings after the Swiss rounds will still be used to determine final order in the standings.

Byes

There was a typo on the information posted on the Professional Event Services Grand Prix Pittsburgh Byes website page. For Bye information for Grand Prix Pittsburgh, please refer to the official Wizards of the Coast Grand Prix Pittsburgh page as it is always the final authority on information for the Grand Prix. You can find the Bye information on that page here: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Events.aspx?x=mtg/event/grandprix/pittsburgh13. We regret the mistake on our page but rest assured that it will not happen again.

Preregistration

Already know that you're wanting to compete in the main event and don't want to have to worry about registering on-site? Wouldn't it be nice to just show up on Saturday morning, knowing that you were already in the tournament? Online preregistration is now a great option for you!

Preregistration means that you are entered into the tournament and must report for the player meeting and may ONLY skip that player meeting and deck registration/construction if you have byes and paid for the Sleep in Special.

Preregistration will be open until 10PM EST on Thursday, March 21, 2013 and is available here.

Sleep in Special

Have some byes and don’t want to get up to register your deck at 9:00 AM? Have I got a deal for you! If you have byes and register Friday or before, you will be allowed to verify your byes during registration. Once confirmed, you will be eligible for the “Sleep in Special”. An additional charge of $20 buys you more sleep, how amazing is that? Sorry, players with byes who register on Saturday are not eligible for the Sleep in Special.

You may ONLY skip the player meeting and deck registration/construction if you paid for the Sleep in Special.

Cost of the Sleep in Special is $20 USD regardless of number of byes.

How the Sleep in Special works

Once you have paid for the Sleep in Special, a sealed deck card pool will also be registered and verified on your behalf. Instead of arriving at 9:00am for the player meeting, you will check in prior to your first round of play and receive a preregistered pool. Preregistered decks are chosen at random for each person from the selection of preregistered decks. From the point when you get the pool, you will have 30 minutes to construct your deck and turn in your decklist. You begin play for the proper round after your byes and continue as normal.

Not going to make it until Saturday morning and want to sleep in? We got that covered too!

If you have one or more byes and want to not show up until you play on Saturday, all you need to do before 10PM EST on Thursday, March 21, 2013 is to preregister here.

Report Times:

  • One Bye: Please report to the build area at 10:30 AM
  • Two Byes: Please report to the build area at 11:30 AM
  • Three Byes: Please report to the build area at 12:30 PM

  • Be on time for the start of your tournaments and for the start of each round.
In order to get everyone out on time, we need to start as soon as possible. If you are late for a tournament or a round, you may be dropped from the tournament.
  • All Universal Tournament Rules and Magic: The Gathering Floor Rules are in effect for this event unless specifically overruled by information in this Format Document
  • Swiss Format? What's that?
There are two main formats for tournaments - single elimination and Swiss. In single elimination when a player loses a match, they are eliminated from the tournament. Booster Drafts are an example of single elimination tournaments. In a Swiss format event, players are not eliminated from the tournament and will be paired for the next round regardless of whether they won or lost their last match. You can play every round of a Swiss format tournament no matter what your record is.
  • Questions? Ask them!
We love questions! If you have a question, please ask an event official (in either the brightly colored staff shirt or the black judge shirt) and we will do our best to answer your question.
  • Players must bring pen, paper, card sleeves and appropriate counters.
