Format

The format for Grand Prix Philadelphia 2012 will be Return to Ravnica Limited. For the Sealed portion of the event, players will be given six packs of Return to Ravnica from which to build a legal deck. Limited decks must contain a minimum of forty cards. There is no maximum deck size; however, you must be able to shuffle your deck with no assistance. All cards remaining in a player's pool after deck construction are their sideboard.

Deck lists are required and a deck registration and deck swap will be performed for the Swiss Sealed Deck.

For the Drafts, players will draft from three booster packs of Return to Ravnica. Deck Registration will be done at the completion of the draft.

Basic land cards will be provided. All cards named Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest are basic.

Official information about Sealed formats can be found in the Magic: The Gathering Floor Rules.

Structure

  • Modified Swiss-style (50-minute rounds).
  • If 799 or fewer players register for the event, all players with an X-2-0 or better record OR the top 64 players—whichever number is greater—will advance to the second day of the event.
  • If 800 or more players register for the event, all players with an X-2-0 or better record OR the top 128 players—whichever number is greater—will advance to the second day of the event.
  • The Top 8 players after the final Swiss round on Day 2 will advance to the Top 8 single-elimination playoff round.
  • Top 8 playoff matches will be best 2 of 3, and have no time limit. (Players are still expected to play at a normal pace and complete playoff matches in a reasonable amount of time.)
  • Where necessary, the standings after the Swiss rounds will still be used to determine final order in the standings.

Byes

Byes will be given to players in the Grand Prix based on the following criteria (Byes are not cumulative throughout the season or year. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. Players that accumulate multiple byes to a particular Grand Prix tournament receive only the bye for the greatest number of rounds):

Third-Round Byes

Second-Round Byes

First-Round Byes

Trial winners

People who win a Trial event are awarded 3 byes in the Grand Prix that it feeds. Trial byes are not cumulative with other byes and do not pass down.

Sleep in Special

Have some byes and don't want to get up to register your deck at 9:00 AM? Have I got a deal for you! If you have byes and register Friday or before, you will be allowed to verify your byes during registration. Once confirmed, you will be eligible for the "Sleep in Special". An additional charge of $20 buys you more sleep, how amazing is that? Sorry, players with byes who register on Saturday are not eligible for the Sleep in Special.

You may ONLY skip the player meeting and deck registration/construction if you paid for the Sleep in Special.

Cost of the Sleep in Special is $20 USD regardless of number of byes.

How the Sleep in Special works

Once you have paid for the Sleep in Special, a sealed deck card pool will also be registered and verified on your behalf. Instead of arriving at 9:00am for the player meeting, you will check in prior to your first round of play and receive a preregistered pool. Preregistered decks are chosen at random for each person from the selection of preregistered decks. From the point when you get the pool, you will have 30 minutes to construct your deck and turn in your decklist. You begin play for the proper round after your byes and continue as normal.

Not going to make it until Saturday morning and want to sleep in? We got that covered too!

If you have one or more byes and want to not show up until you play on Saturday, here is what you need to do before 10PM EST on Thursday, October 25, 2012:
  • Send an email to questions@professional-events.com with the following information:
    • Subject Line of "Sleep in Special for GP Philadelphia for <your name>"
    • Include in the email the following information: Your full name (first and last), your DCI #, the number of byes you think you have and your phone #
    • Show up prior to the start of the round in which you are to first play Saturday morning, construct your deck and get ready to go.
  • Send your full payment of $40 for the GP entry + $20 for the sleep in special via Paypal to mguptil@ix.netcom.com. If you do not have a Paypal account, please contact PES at 1-877-913-8881 to discuss options.
  • Show up prior to the start of the round in which you are to first play Saturday morning and get ready to go.

Spellslinger

Ken Nagle - WotC R&D

Ken Nagle is a game designer at Wizard of the Coast. Ken was a computer programmer before landing a job interview during Mark Rosewater’s Great Designer Search. Now with five years-experience on Magic: The Gathering, DuelMasters, and Kaijudo, Ken’s credits include lead designer of Return to Ravnica, Commander, New Phryexia and more as well as a designer for Avacyn Restored, Magic Core Set 2012, Mirrodin Besieged and more. Ken’s first work for Magic includes playtesting Lorwyn’s Jace Beleren just before designing his first Magic card Merrow Witsniper. Now five years later Ken has designed hundreds of cards; his favorites include Wild Nacatl, Vampire Nocturnus, Stigma Lasher, Psychic Spiral, and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite.

Ken will be taking on all challengers with either a Return to Ravnica sealed deck, or, if constructed formats are more your thing, Standard, Modern, Commander and even some Duel Decks (if you don't happen to have a deck on you). If you are fortunate enough to best him in a One Game Match, Ken will have a selection of boosters to give away as prizes!

Judging GP Philadelphia

Judges for GP Philadelphia have been selected! Thanks to everyone who applied and even more so to those who will be helping us with this great event!

Notes

  • Please watch your possessions.
Do not leave your items unattended. Professional Event Services, LLC, its partners and venues are not responsible for lost or stolen materials. You bring materials at your own risk.
  • Trading is fine.
However, anyone attending the event that buys, sells or solicits other players to do either will be asked to leave the event without refund. Note that offering items such as iPods or PSPs is the same as a cash transaction. This applies to both the buyer and the seller. Professional Event Services, LLC, its partners and venues are not responsible for any "bad" trades nor will we offer any trade advice. Your trades are your own risk.
  • Sportsmanship is very important.
Professional Event Services, LLC greatly values sportsmanship. Poor sportsmanship can lead to warnings, game losses, match losses and disqualification from the tournament. Poor sportsmanship includes trying to trick another player, lying, arguing with an official as well as most other forms of bad behavior. Poor sportsmanship impacts all attendees to the event and reflects poorly on you. At all time, treat other players like you would want to be treated.
  • You do not lose your cards when you play in tournaments.
You always keep your own cards at the conclusion of a tournament. You do not lose them to other players for any reason.
  • We accept cash (only) for payment for events. We only accept cash of the country the event is held in.
  • Be on time for the start of your tournaments and for the start of each round.
In order to get everyone out on time, we need to start as soon as possible. If you are late for a tournament or a round, you may be dropped from the tournament.
  • All Universal Tournament Rules and Magic: The Gathering Floor Rules are in effect for this event unless specifically overruled by information in this Format Document
  • Swiss Format? What's that?
There are two main formats for tournaments - single elimination and Swiss. In single elimination when a player loses a match, they are eliminated from the tournament. Booster Drafts are an example of single elimination tournaments. In a Swiss format event, players are not eliminated from the tournament and will be paired for the next round regardless of whether they won or lost their last match. You can play every round of a Swiss format tournament no matter what your record is.
  • Questions? Ask them!
We love questions! If you have a question, please ask an event official (in either the brightly colored staff shirt or the black judge shirt) and we will do our best to answer your question.
  • Players must bring pen, paper, card sleeves and appropriate counters.
