Format
The format for Grand Prix Detroit 2013 will be Modern Constructed. Constructed decks must contain a minimum of sixty cards. There is no maximum deck size; however, you must be able to shuffle your deck with no assistance. If a player wishes to use a sideboard, it must contain exactly fifteen cards. With the exception of basic land cards, a player’s combined deck and sideboard may not contain more than four of any individual card, counted by its English card title equivalent. All cards named Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest are basic.
Deck lists are required for this event. It is strongly recommended that you fill out a decklist before you arrive at the event. Decklists can be found here.
Official information about formats can be found in the Magic: The Gathering Floor Rules.
Structure
- Modified Swiss-style (50-minute rounds).
- If 799 or fewer players register for the event, all players with an X-2-0 or better record OR the top 64 players—whichever number is greater—will advance to the second day of the event.
- If 800 or more players register for the event, all players with an X-2-0 or better record OR the top 128 players—whichever number is greater—will advance to the second day of the event.
- The Top 8 players after the final Swiss round on Day 2 will advance to the Top 8 single-elimination playoff round.
- Top 8 playoff matches will be best 2 of 3, and have no time limit. (Players are still expected to play at a normal pace and complete playoff matches in a reasonable amount of time.)
- Where necessary, the standings after the Swiss rounds will still be used to determine final order in the standings.

Notes
- Please watch your possessions.
Do not leave your items unattended. Professional Event Services, LLC, its partners and venues are not responsible for lost or stolen materials. You bring materials at your own risk. - Trading is fine.
However, anyone attending the event that buys, sells or solicits other players to do either will be asked to leave the event without refund. Note that offering items such as iPods or PSPs is the same as a cash transaction. This applies to both the buyer and the seller. Professional Event Services, LLC, its partners and venues are not responsible for any "bad" trades nor will we offer any trade advice. Your trades are your own risk. - Sportsmanship is very important.
Professional Event Services, LLC greatly values sportsmanship. Poor sportsmanship can lead to warnings, game losses, match losses and disqualification from the tournament. Poor sportsmanship includes trying to trick another player, lying, arguing with an official as well as most other forms of bad behavior. Poor sportsmanship impacts all attendees to the event and reflects poorly on you. At all time, treat other players like you would want to be treated. - You do not lose your cards when you play in tournaments.
You always keep your own cards at the conclusion of a tournament. You do not lose them to other players for any reason. - We accept cash (only) for payment for events. We only accept cash of the country the event is held in.
- Be on time for the start of your tournaments and for the start of each round.
In order to get everyone out on time, we need to start as soon as possible. If you are late for a tournament or a round, you may be dropped from the tournament. - All Universal Tournament Rules and Magic: The Gathering Floor Rules are in effect for this event unless specifically overruled by information in this Format Document
- Swiss Format? What's that?
There are two main formats for tournaments - single elimination and Swiss. In single elimination when a player loses a match, they are eliminated from the tournament. Booster Drafts are an example of single elimination tournaments. In a Swiss format event, players are not eliminated from the tournament and will be paired for the next round regardless of whether they won or lost their last match. You can play every round of a Swiss format tournament no matter what your record is. - Questions? Ask them!
We love questions! If you have a question, please ask an event official (in either the brightly colored staff shirt or the black judge shirt) and we will do our best to answer your question. - Players must bring pen, paper, card sleeves and appropriate counters.
