The special room rate will be available until August 23rd or until the group block is sold-out, whichever comes first. Format

The format for Grand Prix Detroit 2013 will be Modern Constructed. Constructed decks must contain a minimum of sixty cards. There is no maximum deck size; however, you must be able to shuffle your deck with no assistance. If a player wishes to use a sideboard, it must contain at most fifteen cards.
With the exception of basic land cards, a player’s combined deck and sideboard may not contain more than four of any individual card, counted by its English card title equivalent. All cards named Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest are basic.

Deck lists are required for this event. It is strongly recommended that you fill out a decklist before you arrive at the event. Decklists can be found here.

Official information about formats can be found in the Magic: The Gathering Floor Rules.

Structure

  • Modified Swiss-style (50-minute rounds).
  • If 799 or fewer players register for the event, all players with an X-2-0 or better record OR the top 64 players—whichever number is greater—will advance to the second day of the event.
  • If 800 or more players register for the event, all players with an X-2-0 or better record OR the top 128 players—whichever number is greater—will advance to the second day of the event.
  • The Top 8 players after the final Swiss round on Day 2 will advance to the Top 8 single-elimination playoff round.
  • Top 8 playoff matches will be best 2 of 3, and have no time limit. (Players are still expected to play at a normal pace and complete playoff matches in a reasonable amount of time.)
  • Where necessary, the standings after the Swiss rounds will still be used to determine final order in the standings.

Byes

For Bye information for Grand Prix Detroit, please refer to the official Wizards of the Coast Grand Prix Detroit page as it is always the final authority on information for the Grand Prix. You can find the Bye information on that page here: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Events.aspx?x=mtg/event/grandprix/detroit13..

Preregistration

Already know that you're wanting to compete in the main event and don't want to have to worry about registering on-site? Wouldn't it be nice to just show up on Saturday morning, knowing that you were already in the tournament? Online preregistration is now a great option for you!

Important Things to Know:
  • Preregistration will be open until 10 PM EST on September 12, 2013 and is available here. After that, all preregistration will need to be done on-site.
  • Preregistration means that you are entered into the tournament and must report for the player meeting and may ONLY skip that player meeting if you have byes and paid for the Sleep-In Special.
  • There will be a special check-in line on-site for on-line pre-registered folks. You will avoid much of the crowd this way.
  • Each individual that uses on-line preregistration will be provided a $10 coupon for use in any Sunday Side Event at GP Detroit (coupon has no monetary value, can be used only on Sunday at Grand Prix Detroit 2013 and only one coupon per customer).
  • All promotional items are given out on a first-come, first-served basis to players who turn in registration paperwork on-site while supplies last. If you preregister on-line you are not guaranteed a promotional item. The receipt of promotional items is determined solely by registering or, in the case of those that preregistered on-line, checking-in, on-site. This means that preregistration does not guarantee a promotional item, such as a foil card or a playmat. Those items are available only to preregistrations who check in early on-site unless you opt to register for the VIP Package!

Sleep-In Special

Have some byes and don't want to get up for an early Saturday player meeting? Have I got a deal for you! If you have byes and register any time before Friday, September 13 at 10 PM you are eligible for the "Sleep-In Special". An additional charge of only $10 buys you more sleep - how amazing is that? Sorry, players with byes who register on Saturday are not eligible for the Sleep-In Special.

You may ONLY skip the player meeting if you paid for the Sleep-In Special.

Cost of the Sleep-In Special is $10 USD regardless of number of byes.

How the Sleep-In Special works

Once you have paid for the Sleep-In Special, you need to supply us with your decklist any time prior to the player meeting. If you register for the event online, you will be able to submit your decklist electronically by following the link on the online registration page. Instead of arriving at 10 AM for the player meeting, you will simply show up for your first round of play after your byes and continue as normal.
You will need to report a minimum of 30 minutes PRIOR to the start of your first round of play. The report times for Saturday are:
  • 1 Bye: 10:30 AM
  • 2 Bye: 11:30 AM
  • 3 Bye: 12:30 PM

VIP Package

For the greatest convenience and ease at a Grand Prix weekend, try our VIP package. The VIP package service fee is $50 in addition to the main event fee. Please note, only a limited amount of VIP packages are available. VIP package is only available online until online pre-registration ends. Sorry, but VIP registration is NOT available onsite.
Prior to 10 PM on September 13, 2013, you can preregister for the VIP Package online here.

VIP Package includes:
  • Playmat guarantee - Unlike preregistration or the SiS, VIPs are guaranteed a Grand Prix commemorative playmat!
  • Sleep-In Special - Is included in the VIP package!
  • VIP Goody Bag - Drawstring back pack filled with items to make your day better, including a water bottle!

Notes

  • Please watch your possessions.
Do not leave your items unattended. Professional Event Services, LLC, its partners and venues are not responsible for lost or stolen materials. You bring materials at your own risk.
  • Trading is fine.
However, anyone attending the event that buys, sells or solicits other players to do either will be asked to leave the event without refund. Note that offering items such as iPods or PSPs is the same as a cash transaction. This applies to both the buyer and the seller. Professional Event Services, LLC, its partners and venues are not responsible for any "bad" trades nor will we offer any trade advice. Your trades are your own risk.
  • Sportsmanship is very important.
Professional Event Services, LLC greatly values sportsmanship. Poor sportsmanship can lead to warnings, game losses, match losses and disqualification from the tournament. Poor sportsmanship includes trying to trick another player, lying, arguing with an official as well as most other forms of bad behavior. Poor sportsmanship impacts all attendees to the event and reflects poorly on you. At all time, treat other players like you would want to be treated.
  • You do not lose your cards when you play in tournaments.
You always keep your own cards at the conclusion of a tournament. You do not lose them to other players for any reason.
  • We accept cash (only) for payment for events. We only accept cash of the country the event is held in.
  • Be on time for the start of your tournaments and for the start of each round.
In order to get everyone out on time, we need to start as soon as possible. If you are late for a tournament or a round, you may be dropped from the tournament.
  • All Universal Tournament Rules and Magic: The Gathering Floor Rules are in effect for this event unless specifically overruled by information in this Format Document
  • Swiss Format? What's that?
There are two main formats for tournaments - single elimination and Swiss. In single elimination when a player loses a match, they are eliminated from the tournament. Booster Drafts are an example of single elimination tournaments. In a Swiss format event, players are not eliminated from the tournament and will be paired for the next round regardless of whether they won or lost their last match. You can play every round of a Swiss format tournament no matter what your record is.
  • Questions? Ask them!
We love questions! If you have a question, please ask an event official (in either the brightly colored staff shirt or the black judge shirt) and we will do our best to answer your question.
  • Players must bring pen, paper, card sleeves and appropriate counters.
